We were engaged to create a historic feeling front garden in keeping with the mock Tudor style of the house, with a feeling in line with a Sissinghurst or Great Dixter style garden. The garden was to possess an immediately aged feel and maturity, complementing the property style.
Design
Working alongside our strategic partner Nina Baxter, a ‘Knot Garden’ was created with geometric pathways laid in aged stock bricks in both basket weave and herringbone patterns. A ‘Sunburst’ tile feature was added to the central pathway area for ornate detailing. This was all sheltered via mature planting from the driveway, which was to be laid using semi-bonded shingle edged with Portuguese granite.
Installation process
Being a winter build, the garden was installed with care due to low temperatures and frost. Precise attention to detail was required to ensure symmetry was achieved with all pathways. A meticulous approach was needed when laying the pathways, with hand pointing of bricks to deliver an immediate aged appearance. The garden was planted using a generous herbaceous perennial palette, with Murtus low level hedging offering immediate structure to internal flower beds. All perimeter flower beds were planted with mature Taxus hedging. Each flower bed was fitted with automated irrigation and remote activated lighting.
